I titled this painting after my son walked through my (bedroom) studio and pointed at this work in progress and asked if that one was mommy. It hurt me to hear that question and also made me feel so seen — that one there in the paint is Mommy, more than the one out here trying to parent. My identity as an artist is constantly drowning in my motherhood. The selfie is taken in a mirror but the layered type references signs found in plate glass windows downtown, where I walk to my job.
